HP Omen Challenge Twitch Con

11 Nov

Taking place from September 30th – October 2nd at the San Diego Convention Centre, TwitchCon celebrated all things that make the online streaming service special, from games to hardware to software to the community itself. However it’s one event in particular that we’ll be focusing on in this EventStream, the return of the HP Omen Challenge.

HP Omen Challenge

The HP Omen Challenge pitted four teams of five gaming industry influencers against each other, playing Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm, previous incarnations included Valve’s Counter-Strike Global Offensive and popular MOBA smite. Seems fairly placid yes? That’s what HP thought, and so they decided to have the competitors play the games in special ‘torture chambers’ designed to introduce some extreme distractions  to liven up play.

The 4500 physical attendees and millions more viewing online were then given the opportunity to vote for ‘tortures’ which would be applied every 15 minutes, including, but not limited to, earthquakes, electric shocks, bright flashes, smoke grenades, air blasts and extreme heat. The clever use of live engagement technology is sure to spark more interest in the already rapidly growing eSports industry and we hope to see more like this in future.

“Gaming is a big and growing trend, and it’s a very specific segment—they have their own language and their own way of doing things—so we’re trying to understand gamers and position our marketing toward them, but in a fun and engaging way,” says Renata Gaspar, U.S. consumer marketing director-personal computing, at HP.
