Our home town of Cardiff, or ‘Caerdydd’ as it’s known by the locals, is a city close to our hearts and as such seemed the obvious choice for our first City Spotlight feature.

Cardiff – The City

The capital city of Wales since 1955, is the country’s commercial centre and home to Wales’ media, government and national sports teams.  With a population of approximately 346,000, it is the tenth largest city in the UK.

Industry has played a major part in Cardiff’s growth over the years, fueled by the worldwide demand for coal which was brought to sea from the South Wales valleys.  At it’s peak Cardiff’s port, known as Tiger Bay, became the busiest in the world and prior to the First World War, over ten million tonnes of coal was exported from Cardiff Docks annually.

Cardiff has a growing and ethnically diverse population due to its past trading connections, post-war immigration and thriving university, and this diversity has been celebrated through a number of cultural events and exhibitions in the city.

As one of the most popular cities in the UK, tourism makes a significant contribution to the city’s economy, welcoming 18 million visitors in 2010 generating £850 million for the Welsh economy.

So why is Cardiff such a great city for events and experiential campaigns? We must first consider it as one of the great cities for sport which sees thousands of fans flocking to the city centre each year, to visit the home of the Welsh Rugby Union; the iconic Principality Stadium, and the relatively new Cardiff City FC stadium.

Cardiff is also home to many conference and exhibition venues. In addition to the aforementioned stadiums, there is the Motorpoint Arena, the Wales Millennium Centre, not to mention an abundance of fantastic hotels.
