Blood & Wine Edinburgh

06 Jan

Since winter has been here for a while, today we look to the frozen north, beyond the wall (sort of), to Edinburgh, for our latest EventStream. Blood & Wine is a Game Of Thrones-themed pop-up bar, situated below Daylight Robbery Bar on Edinburgh’s Dublin Street. The bar itself is decked out in true Game Of Thrones style, including a small armory of swords, provided by Edinburgh sword-retailer The Knight’s Vault, that would make the Lannisters proud, or at least more smug.

Blood & Wine Edinburgh

The experience is the brainchild of the Pop Up Geeks, who have previously launched pop ups in London and Norwich. Speaking on why they chose the Scottish capital as their location for experience Linden Wilkinson said:

“We think a city as beautiful and atmospheric as Edinburgh is the perfect place to host Blood & Wine, it’s absolutely on par with Kings Landing,”

“Everything’s better with some wine in the belly.”

According to Wilkinson, “Our menu consists entirely of drinks mentioned, drunk, thrown or poisoned in the novels or the show,” so caution is advised if a hooded stranger offers you a round.

Customers can enjoy; Liquid Moon, Lys The Lovely, Dornish Sour Red, Volantis Sweet Red, The Imp’s Delight and Arbor Gold, and that’s just the wine list! Black Tar Rum, Old Bear’s Spiced Wine and the Mountain’s very own Icelandic Mountain Vodka are all present, on a menu created in close collaboration with Royal Mile Whiskies.

Pop Up Culture

The Blood and Wine Bar, which launched January 4th, will be open for business every Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5pm throughout January in the cellar of Daylight Robbery Bar. If you find yourself in the area be sure to check it out.

TV show-themed pop ups bring a refreshing change of pace from the current swathe of “trendy” bars which have become common place. This is especially true when it is done with the attention to detail that the Pop Up Geeks have shown with Blood & Wine.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Geeks’ future creations, which are set to include a ‘Harry Potter’ themed experience titled ‘Perilous Potions‘, and an aptly named ‘Survive‘, based on AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’. If these two are produced half as well as their Game of Thrones counterpart, they’re not to be missed.

To end with a quote from the creators:

“come along and taste your way through the Seven Kingdoms but remember, when you play the Game of Thrones, you drink or you die.”
